- Notching up the gears outside the comfort zone
They say life begins at the end of your comfort zone and our HR Support Consultant Makere is certainly stepping outside of hers as she prepares for the annual Maca Cancer 200 Ride for Research with our Blue Tongue team next month.
Blue Tongue staff have proudly been part of this 200km journey for the last 11 years, raising funds to support the world-class cancer researchers at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research who help our friends and family battling this terrible disease.

Makere shares her story with us on why she does it and what motivates her to keep going.
“The Macac200 ride is definitely something outside of my comfort zone. But training with my work colleagues and riding with them on the day definitely brings us all closer together. We have a lot of laughs and it’s an experience I would never normally even think about doing or even be able to finish if I wasn’t doing it with them.
This is my third year doing it and my goal is to raise $2500 — I’ve got $285 to go! The first two years I did no training, which nearly killed me last year! So, I’ve purchased a bike this year and I’m actually doing some training now! It helps that we have Kings Park on our office doorstep so we can head out for a scenic ride during lunch breaks. We are also lucky to have Tully on our team, who’s been riding for many years and keeps us motivated with training tips and advice.
Finishing the ride last year was a huge achievement for me, as it could have gone two ways. But together with my colleagues Gail and Matt we crossed the finish line together as a team and that was such a great feeling. If it wasn’t for their encouragement along the 200km I would never have been able to finish the ride in the time that we did. We now call ourselves the tripod!
This year I want to finish one hour faster than last year — if I can do that I will be over the moon!”
