After onboarding through Blue Tongue’s International Talent Program, Joseph has felt warmly welcomed to Australia.

“It’s nice being here!” Joseph said.

“I already had a picture of Australian work culture from my friends that worked here before. I always wanted to work here. Besides that, we all know it’s good pay here – better than home.”

“The other thing is, Australians are very good people; very welcoming and very understanding. There are a lot of guys from New Zealand working on the mines; they are like the icing on the cake.”

“One of my friends told his family about me, and it was close to Christmas, and his mother asked him if I could join them since my family wasn’t here. I went there, it was nice, they are very good people. This has never happened in my life!”

What has working with MACA been like?

“I thought maybe it would be hard for me. When you go to a new environment, different culture and different people, I was really nervous!”

“When I started to work, I found the guys to be so helpful on how they run the systems and everything. I had to adapt quickly.”

After starting out in MACA’s Welshpool workshop, Joseph sought a FIFO position within the company to “get more money and work more hours.”

“I’m working at MACA Roy Hill. I just went there three weeks ago. They picked some good guys to start this new contract; I was lucky I was picked.”

“I was nervous, too, because it was my first time on a mining site in Australia. I wanted to know how they work, but the mining industry is similar, so it wasn’t very hard for me to blend in.”

How has Blue Tongue supported you through this transition?

“The Blue Tongue upskill guys really welcomed me!”

“If I have any challenges, I will definitely call Makere and Gail at Blue Tongue; they are very helpful. Even when everything is okay, they always check up on you.”

“Personally, I don’t like to switch companies anyhow. With the help they’re giving me, I want to do my time with Blue Tongue!”

Joseph is looking forward to showing his wife the Australian way of life.

“I got married two months before coming to Australia. I had discussed [the opportunity] with my wife because it wasn’t clear at first whether I was going to come or not due to COVID-19. Before I married, I discussed with her to see if this happens – if she was okay for me to come here.”

“My wife is coming early next month. She would enjoy living here, and I’m telling her stories about Australia. I think we will go to Rottnest Island for three days when she comes.”
