Four months into his Heavy Duty (HD) Mechanical apprenticeship with Blue Tongue and MACA Mining, Jake is loving life and looking forward to what the future holds.

After beginning his career in the automotive trades – before moving into an aviation role – Jake is now making significant progress through Blue Tongue’s Advanced Group Training Program and a mix of on the job and simulated training.

“For me, it was all about career progression,” Jake said.

“You can go a lot further out here, my ultimate goal is to become a supervisor, and that just didn’t make sense where I was.”

Jake’s gone from dealing with small cars in a town based workshop, fixing routine and repetitive problems, to now working on a broad range of advanced mining equipment – while developing his HD skillset in unison.

“The guys I went through training with we’re very good, with the right mindset for mining,” he said.

“On my last swing, I was changing out a water pump on a grader at Iron Ridge, a brand new mine site that’s still being set up – I just took my time and made sure I got it right.”

“You can learn a lot more out here in the real world than in the city, and small cars are a pain in the arse!”

When it comes to his new FIFO lifestyle, Jake reckons the benefits are many and wide-ranging.

“I get to spend a lot more quality time with my family, my wife and daughter,” he said.

“The 2 & 1 roster means we can go away camping or on holidays thanks to the longer blocks of time off; it’s a great lifestyle.”
